Many people struggle with extra fat around their chin area, which is also known as submental fullness. This can be due to age, weight, or even genetics, and can be detrimental to self-image, especially when it can be difficult to get rid of through exercise at a healthy weight. While a neck lift or chin augmentation can create a new chin and jaw profile, it can be costly and require extensive downtime. Kybella is an injection that specifically reduces submental fullness.
What is Kybella?
This injection uses deoxycholic acid, a substance found in the body that breaks down and absorbs fat. When injected under the chin, it permanently destroys the fat cells, meaning they can no longer grow or shrink with weight gain or loss. The results of Kybella are permanent and will remain through the aging process.
Should I consider Kybella treatments?
If you are self-conscious about your chin profile and are bothered by the way it appears in photographs, Kybella injections may be able to help. Sometimes diet and exercise can’t remove the fat from the chin area, and surgical options can be detrimental to your health and schedule. If you have had or plan to have a surgical procedure in your chin area, be sure to let Dr. Richardson know when considering Kybella. Also, let us know if you are pregnant or nursing. On average, patients receive up to three treatments before seeing best results. Dr. Richardson can help you determine what treatment plan will be best for you.
What are the Results and Recovery like?
Since Kybella is injectable, there is no downtime required after the procedure. There may be some swelling or bruising at the injection site, but this will go away within a few days. Any discomfort during the injection can be managed with a topical numbing agent. Since Kybella might require multiple treatments, it may take up to six months before best results are seen, as treatments are usually spaced one month apart.
